Good Shepherd Goes to the Hive 3/3/12

Once again, we've secured a block of heavily discounted tickets ($17 a piece, over 50% off regular price for sidecourt upper deck seats) for the 7:00 PM Saturday, March 3 Hornets game versus the Indiana Pacers.  This is a great opportunity for our immediate and extended church family to go out, have a good time and cheer on our local team to another big W.

Deadline to make your reservations and purchase tickets is Sunday, February 12.  Jordy is handling all the arrangements and can answer any additional questions.  Make your checks payable to him, not the Hornets.

Last year, over 40 people attended Good Shepherd  night and we'd like to top that figure this year.  Please invite your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to join us - the more the merrier.  Let's all "Fan Up" and support The Bees.

Ladies' Craft Class

The Craft Class is currently selling Mardi Gras wreaths, pins etc. They are on display in the Church foyer.  The ladies will begin working on Easter items shortly.  Please keep an eye out for their wonderful creations.  Anyone interested in joining, please see Ms. June.  Craft Class is held every Wednesday in the fellowship hall from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM.  Bring your lunch and new ideas!

Women's Guild Meeting and Bible Study

The next Women's Guild meeting will be on Tuesday, February 14 at 10:00 AM.  This will be a Bible Study class and all are welcome.  For more information, please see Women's Guild President Thais Lacrouts.

January 2012 In Review

What a busy month first month of the year for Good Shepherd.  It came to a great conclusion on Sunday, January 29 with our Fifth Sunday Celebration.

The Fifth Sunday Celebration is a relatively new tradition at Good Shepherd, having only started in May 2011.  Each fifth Sunday of the month, Good Shepherd forgoes the typical Sunday service in lieu of an all music service followed by a potluck lunch in the fellowship hall.  The music for each service has followed a different theme each time.  In May 2011, the theme was Praise and Worship.  In July 2011 it was Country Gospel, while in October 2011 it was favorite hymns.  On January 29, our music consisted of a chronological survey of church music from the Reformation through today's modern praise music, complete with some added teaching about each era and song from our music director, Mr. Jordy Luft.

On January 29, Good Shepherd had the extra bonus of showing the movie "The Case for Christ" in our sanctuary after lunch.  While this was required viewing for our confirmands and their parents, the activity was opened to all and about two dozen members and visitors chose to stay and watch this most interesting film.

Good Shepherd's next Fifth Sunday Celebration will occur on April 29, 2012.

February Musical Highlights

February 5:  It's UCC Women's Sunday and, as usual, there will be a special All Women's Chorus to mark the occasion.  See separate article for details.  The Choir will also perform a Communion-themed anthem, Jay Althouse's lovely and melodic  "Remember Me".

February 12:  The Choir goes gospel with a tuneful, swing rendition of Thomas Dorsey's classic "If We Ever Needed The Lord Before".   And the Youth Choir will present another one of their spirited, memorable songs.

February 19:   Happy Mardi Gras!   Both Jordy and the Choir will be taking a break before the very busy Lenten/Easter season.

February 26:  It's the first Sunday of Lent and, in what has become an annual tradition, we'll feature a series of opening hymns focusing specifically on the Cross.  Throughout the season until Palm Sunday, you'll hear/sing such familiar titles as "Lift High The Cross", "In The Cross of Christ, I Glory" and "Jesus, Keep Me Near The Cross."  Additionally, the Choir will perform the traditional and haunting ballad, "Jesus Walked This Lonesome Valley".   Finally, Janet Young will lead the Children's Bell Choir in an appropriate selection.
